Mr Samson Olatubosun Thomas, a foundation staff of Union Homes Savings and Loans Plc, is currently the institution’s third Chief Executive Officer since its establishment in 1994. He joined Union Homes as an Assistant General Manager, following his appointment to set up the mortgage finance institution with the pioneer Managing Director. Mr Thomas was selected and tasked with this responsibility on account of his being hardworking, persevering and innovative.
Prior to joining Union Homes, Mr Thomas, a seasoned banker, author and banking teacher, was Union Bank’s Relief Chief Economist. He began his banking career in 1974 in Union Bank and served in several capacities in the bank’s branches and departments. At different times, he was a Manager, and for some years, he served in key positions in Union Bank’s Staff Training Centre.
Until his new appointment, Thomas was Executive Director in charge of Union Homes Banking & Corporate Resources, a position in which he played spectacular roles in realigning and sustaining the current focus of the two-time Nigerian Stock Exchange’s award-winning primary mortgage institution.
A stickler for time, Mr Thomas’ passion for excellence and penchant for transformational growth earned him a steady rise in Union Homes. A suave, confident and well-informed banker, Thomas is also a respected Administrator and Trainer. For some years while in Union Bank, he was a trainer’s Trainer, an attribute he brought to bear on the culture of Union Homes. His recent book titled “Mortgage Lending in Nigeria” is highly rated among mortgage bankers, and practitioners in housing related professions, and is in use in tertiary institutions.
An Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Fellow of the Institute of Credit Administration of Nigeria and a member of the Institute of Directors of Nigeria, among others, Thomas holds an M.Sc degree in Banking and Finance from University of Ibadan. He is widely travelled, has attended many seminars and banking courses within and outside Nigeria, and distinguished himself professionally in mortgage-finance circles. It is on record that Mr. Thomas was in the pioneer team that initiated the present alliance between Home Finance Company Ltd, Ghana and Union Bank Group, which midwifed HFC Bank (Ghana) Ltd, and opened the Ghana finance market to Nigerian banks.
